A propos du centre ou de la direction fonctionnelle

The Inria centre at Université Côte d'Azur includes 42 research teams and 9 support services. The centre's staff (about 500 people) is made up of scientists of different nationalities, engineers, technicians and administrative staff. The teams are mainly located on the university campuses of Sophia Antipolis and Nice as well as Montpellier, in close collaboration with research and higher education laboratories and establishments (Université Côte d'Azur, CNRS, INRAE, INSERM ...), but also with the regiona economic players.

With a presence in the fields of computational neuroscience and biology, data science and modeling, software engineering and certification, as well as collaborative robotics, the Inria Centre at Université Côte d'Azur  is a major player in terms of scientific excellence through its results and collaborations at both European and international levels.

Contexte et atouts du poste

The needs of modern processes such as additive manufacturing or gigacasting
in automotive industry, can no longer be met by standard B-rep (boundary
representation) modeling, as they require representation and manipulation
of interior (volumetric) data for material properties, simulation and opti-
mization. As the name suggests, boundary representation does not model
the interior of a design, but only its “shell”. Moreover, while the need for
an integrated interplay between design and analysis has been recognized as
crucial almost since the advent of geometric modeling, contemporary model-
ing systems preclude direct interaction between the two, if at all. Trimmed
volumes, so called, V-reps, is a recent idea that has attracted attention; how-
ever, it lacks smoothness properties and, most importantly, robustness.
The VOLMOD project aims to confront this existing design standard and
anticipate foreseen challenges in design and manufacturing.

Mission confiée

The successful candidate will work on smooth multipatch constructions in the 3D/volumetric case and also at using those to produce a novel volumetric modeling pipeline that generates SV-
reps: smooth, analysis suitable, volumetric shape representation of complex
shapes. In particular, the ambition of VOLMOD is to rethink a full design
and simulation pipeline by means of pure hexahedral topology smooth vol-
ume represenations (SV-reps). Three main challenges are in place: First,
the generation of smooth volume descriptions of complex shapes;
second, the efficient reconstruction of volumetric models from scattered data, and, thirdly, the development of volumetric unstructured splines that are suitable for analysis.
