 Position:  A 2  years post doctoral  researcher (renewable as  research enginneer)  position is open at INRIA – Grenoble, MORPHEO team (https://team.inria.fr/morpheo/).

Date: The position will start in fall 2021. Funding is for 24 months (renewable).

Advisors: The retained candidate will be advised by Sergi Pujades (Morpheo INRIA Grenoble, France)  and Nikolas Hesse (Swiss Children's Rehab, University Children's hospital Zurich, Switzerland).

The ShapeUp Keiki  project is the third project of the ongoing ShapeUp Studies series, where humans in the ages ranging from newborn to 5 year old will be studied.

The purpose of these studies is to explore and develop ways to measure health and body composition from 2D and 3D images, or optical scans. These technologies take a look inside areas of the human body hidden by our skin and bones. Researchers will test if new imaging machines can provide useful and detailed information about various health and wellness risks. Participants provide the data needed for researchers to continue this study, which will create the largest and most powerful description of optical body shape and its association and calibration to body composition, metabolic markers, function, and dietary intake.


In this project the Post-doctoral researcher will work on statistical models of the shape of infants, building on the SMIL body model [1]. The data used in the project will be multi-modal: optical scans, Bone Densitometry (DEXA) images as well as other clinical data such as body composition or metabolic makers.
The goal is to find the relations between the observations obtained with these modalities (internal and external), and provide innovative methods in order to infer the internal measurements from the external ones.

Main activities

Precisely, there are two main objectives. The first objective is to register the multi-modal data (optical scans and DEXA images) using the SMIL body model. The second objective is to study the relations between the external and internal methods.

Data corpus:

The data is acquired by the other consortium partners. No data acquisition will be performed by the candidate.




Candidate Profile:

- A master in Computer Science or Applied Mathematic (mandatory).
- Strong mathematical background - geometry  - optimization techniques
- Strong coding skills (c++ / python)
- Good Oral and written English
- Candidate should have preliminary experience in at least two of the following areas: medical image processing - geometry processing - machine learning.

A specific section in the application letter must explain the personal experience in these areas.


- Due to the collaboration with the Hawaiian Cancer Centers, weekly group meetings are held in the evening in Europe (20h - 22h). The candidate should arrange once a week to be available at this time.

- An annual consortium meeting is held in Hawaii (usually in summer). The candidate should be available for a business travel of approx. a week.
