Internship UX/UI Design

Level of qualifications required : Master's or equivalent

Fonction : Internship Engineering

About the research centre or Inria department

The Inria center at the University of Rennes is one of eight Inria centers and has more than thirty research teams. The Inria center is a major and recognized player in the field of digital sciences. It is at the heart of a rich ecosystem of R&D and innovation, including highly innovative SMEs, large industrial groups, competitiveness clusters, research and higher education institutions, centers of excellence, and technological research institutes.

Context

OpenViBE is an open-source software designed for brain-computer interfaces (BCI) and real-time neuroscience applications. It provides a platform for the acquisition, processing, and visualization of brain signals and enables communication with third-party applications. OpenViBE is used across a variety of fields, including neuroscience research, rehabilitation, sports, and entertainment. It is a foundational tool for several research teams at Inria, CNRS, and Inserm, and is used in numerous international laboratories.

Assignment

As part of this internship in UX/UI Design, you will contribute to the complete redesign of the user interface for the OpenViBE software. Development of this new cross-platform interface (Windows/Linux/OSX) has already begun and is based on the Qt/QML framework to ensure a unified look across different platforms. You will be responsible for enhancing the user experience (UX) by designing ergonomic and intuitive interfaces, while taking into account the specific needs of the users. Additionally, you will also work on the UI (User Interface) aspect, focusing on the visual style guide, harmonization of visual elements, and the creation of cohesive and visually appealing interfaces. This internship will give you the opportunity to work at the intersection of functional and visual design, in close collaboration with the development team.

Main activities

User Needs Analysis: Conduct user research (interviews, observations, surveys) to understand the specific expectations and usage patterns of the research team.

User Experience (UX) Design: Create functional wireframes using tools like Figma.

User Interface (UI) Design: Contribute to the creation of the visual style guide, including color schemes, typography, icons, and visual layout to ensure a cohesive and visually appealing interface.

Collaboration with Developers: Work closely with the technical team to ensure accurate implementation of designs, checking that created interfaces align with the wireframes.

Process Documentation: Write reports on design decisions, user testing, and improvements made to ensure effective communication and project tracking.

Optionally:

Prototyping with Qt/QML: Integrate and test wireframes within the Qt/QML environment to visualize interface interactions and ergonomics in real-time.

Interface Testing and Validation: Organize and conduct user tests to assess the effectiveness of proposed solutions, gather feedback, and enhance design iterations.

Skills

UX/UI design and associated tools (e.g Figma), understanding of front-end development, documentation writing (in English).

Demonstrating critical thinking, effective communication and curiosity, while showing autonomy in problem-solving
